Spire Global (NYSE: SPIR) and PlanetiQ will provide space-based radio occultation data products to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under a shared follow-on contract worth $59.3 million over five years.
NOAA awarded the Radio Occultation Data Buy II vehicle as part of an agency initiative to evaluate the impact of commercial data on weather forecast models, according to award notices posted Thursday on SAM.gov.
The agency intends to feed neutral atmosphere and ionosphere data into its operational data systems to support weather, climate and atmospheric research projects.
RODB-2 has an ordering period of five years that will commence on March 27 and run until March 26, 2028.
The second purchase comes eight months after NOAA awarded pilot contracts to Spire, PlanetiQ and GeoOptics.
