Navy Sets Timeframe for Follow-On Shipboard Network Procurement

The U.S. Navy has indicated its intent to launch a full and open competition for a follow-on contract vehicle to procure afloat network devices, initial software, spares, laboratory equipment and software renewal and maintenance services.

A presolicitation notice posted Monday on SAM.gov says the military branch is looking to release the competitive request for proposals for its Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services contract in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2021 or the first quarter of fiscal year 2022.

The upcoming CANES procurement effort will be a follow-on to the $2.53 billion contract originally awarded to BAE Systems, General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), Global Technical Systems, Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) and Serco Inc. in August 2014.

CGI (NYSE: GIB) and Leonardo joined the list of prime contractors for the program in January 2015.

CANES will function as a tactical system that consolidates and modernizes five shipboard legacy networks for command, control, intelligence and logistics applications, according to the Navy.

The branch expects to award positions on the new potential 10-year contract in the Q4 FY2022 timeframe.
