NASA Taps SpaceX for $255M Dark Energy, Exoplanet Observatory Mission

SpaceX has been selected to deploy a NASA observatory in October 2026 to support infrared astrophysics research under a potential $255 million indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract.

The NASA Launch Services II contract covers launch and other mission-related costs for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, the agency said Wednesday.

The observatory, formerly known as the Wide Field InfraRed Survey Telescope, is designed to help scientists further study exoplanets and understand dark energy and dark matter.

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, manages the Roman Space Telescope mission, which is the top-priority mission from the 2010 Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey.
