The Missile Defense Agency has released a solicitation for the Next-Generation Interceptor program, Defense News reported Friday.
MDA requested $664.1M in fiscal 2021 funds for NGI, which replaces the Redesigned Kill Vehicle program as part of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense System designed to defend the U.S. against ballistic missile defense threats. RKV was canceled in August due to technical issues.
The agency plans to downselect to two vendors and will accept proposals through July 31.
“Notably, the intention of awarding two contracts for simultaneous development of the NGI effort promotes a healthy competition between the two contractor teams to produce the best NGI possible in the shortest time feasible,” said Mark Wright, a spokesman for MDA.
Michael Griffin, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering and a two-time Wash100 award winner, said in March that he expects four companies to submit proposals for the NGI program.
