A report by consulting firm McAleese & Associates says the total U.S. Air Force budget request for fiscal year 2020 is roughly $205B, including $166B in “blue” funds and another $39B in “non-blue” funds.
The services proposed FY 2020 budget seeks $46.1B in research, development, test and evaluation funds associated with several programs such as hypersonics; adaptive engine program; Ground Based Strategic Deterrent initiative; and Section 804 Protected Tactical Service and Protected Satellite Communications programs, Jim McAleese, founder and principal at McAleese & Associates, wrote in the report.
Hypersonic prototyping activities would get $576M in FY 2020 funds, while the Long Range Stand-Off Weapon and GBSD programs would respectively receive $713M and $570M in budget.
The Air Force sought $17.1B in budget for aircraft procurement efforts, including plans to procure 48 units of the F-35 fighter aircraft as well as F-15EX fighter jets.
McAleese, a 2019 Wash100 winner, noted the budget includes $3.1B in proposed funds to support the acquisition of missile systems such as Hellfire, Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile and Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile.
Space programs such as GPS IIIF, OPIR and the National Security Space Launch initiative, previously known as Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle, would get $2.4B in funds, according to the report.
For the upcoming fiscal year, the service requested $64.7B in total budget for operations and maintenance funds; $2.6B for ammunition procurement; and $38.6B in military personnel appropriations.
