Peters, who currently serves as executive vice president for national laboratory management and operations at Battelle, will succeed the retiring Jason Providakes, a 37-year MITRE veteran and a three-time Wash100 awardee, the nonprofit research company said Thursday.
Rodney Slater, chairman of MITRE’s board of trustees, said Peters brings to the company “a technical curiosity and a systems-thinking mindset” and will oversee a team of nearly 10,000 personnel to advance innovation and improve problem solving in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, national defense, public health, transportation safety and other tech areas.
At Battelle, Peters provides governance and oversees national labs for the departments of Energy and Homeland Security.
He has over 25 years of leadership experience in government, research and development and national security and is an expert in nuclear fuel cycle technologies and nuclear waste management.
His career included time as director of Idaho National Laboratory, president of Battelle Energy Alliance and associate laboratory director for the energy and global security directorate at Argonne National Laboratory.
Peters also held leadership roles at Los Alamos National Laboratory and served as chair of the National Laboratory Directors’ Council.
“I’m honored and humbled to serve the public interest and build on MITRE’s entrepreneurial spirit and record of success in federal and collaborative R&D on consequential technology like AI, cybersecurity, data analytics, and nuclear communications, command and control systems,” said Peters.
