The Department of Defense said Thursday that Schmidt will receive a promotion to the rank of lieutenant general along with his new assignment.
He is currently serving as program executive officer for command, control, communication, intelligence and networks at the U.S. Air Force and is responsible for overseeing a $15.1 billion portfolio of acquisition programs.
Schmidt served as PEO for fighters and bombers before he was appointed to his current role in April 2018. Before that, he was PEO for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and special operations forces.
He also led fixed-wing programs at U.S. Special Operations Command.
Earlier in his career, Schmidt was assigned to Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) as program manager for fire control systems as part of USAF’s Education with Industry program.
