Lockheed to Continue Rocket Launcher Recapitalization Effort Under $224M Army Deal

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has secured a $224 million contract modification from the U.S. Army for recapitalization work on a transportable automatic system for launching surface-to-surface missiles.

The contractor will restructure the Multiple Launch Rocket System to allow it to be used on the M270A2 family of launcher weapons platforms, the Department of Defense said Friday.

Lockheed will conduct the recapitalization of the MLRS from M270 into the M270A2 configuration at its facilities in Camden, Arizona; and Grand Prairie and New Boston, Texas, through April 30, 2026.

Following the update, the launchers are expected to feature new engines, improved armored cabs, common fire control system, enhanced and rebuilt transmissions as well as modernized system components.

The M270A2 systems will also be provided to the U.K. military as part of a five-year program with the DOD.

Fiscal 2022 missile procurement funds from the Army and the Foreign Military Sales program covered all of the contract modification amount, which was obligated to Lockheed at the time of the award.

In April 2021, the defense company was awarded a $214.7 million contract modification for the same MLRS recapitalization work.
