Space Force Adds L3Harris to Missile Track Custody Program

L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has received a $29 million contract to design an overhead persistent infrared sensor payload for the U.S. Space Force’s future missile warning satellite network.

The company will conduct an initial one-year OPIR sensor payload design for the first increment of Space Systems Command’s medium-Earth orbit constellation intended to support missile tracking operations, the command said Monday.

SSC expects the first system of the Resilient Missile Warning/Missile Tracking MEO – Missile Track Custody constellation to be ready in fiscal year 2026 and fiscal 2027.

L3Harris is the third contractor selected by the command to perform work under the Epoch 1 MTC space vehicle procurement effort.

In 2021, Boeing‘s (NYSE: BA) Millennium Space Systems subsidiary and Raytheon Technologies‘ (NYSE: RTX) intelligence and space unit received separate contracts to create digital models of the next-generation OPIR sensor technology.
