Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has received a potential $156 million sole-source, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract from the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration Office of Secure Transportation, or OST, to provide mobile counter-unmanned aircraft systems in support of Project Solar Shield.

The company said Tuesday DOE awarded the single-award IDIQ contract following a technical evaluation process.
What Is the Scope of the DOE Contract?
Kratos will provide mobile C-UAS platforms designed to detect, track, identify and respond to potentially hostile UAS in real time. DOE selected the company after evaluating its ability to meet OST’s technical, schedule, cost, safety, operational, redundancy, integration and long-term sustainment requirements.
Kratos will combine C-UAS technology, command-and-control systems, mobile platform design and power management capabilities into an integrated solution.
The company will immediately perform contract work at its own facilities.
What Is Project Solar Shield?
Project Solar Shield calls for a mobile C-UAS capability that can support OST operations wherever they occur, rather than relying on fixed-site defense infrastructure. The program will use government and commercial C-UAS technologies to provide a layered defense posture for OST personnel and mission requirements.

Dave Carter, president of the defense and rocket support services division at Kratos, said Project Solar Shield marks a key milestone for the company and the broader government C-UAS market. “The resulting platform provides OST with a highly modular and scalable mobile C-UAS capability, designed to support evolving mission requirements across the continental United States,” he said.
What Other Recent Developments Has Kratos Announced?
The DOE award adds to a series of recent moves by Kratos to expand its national security footprint. The company recently secured approximately $400 million in new funding from the Department of War to continue work on hypersonic systems and other national security-related programs.
Kratos also announced the opening of a new advanced manufacturing facility in York, Pennsylvania, expanding its operations to support its portfolio of critical national security programs, including hypersonic systems, missile defense, air defense, radar and C-UAS programs. In addition, the company expanded its Oklahoma City manufacturing campus to accelerate the production of the Valkyrie collaborative combat aircraft, Firejet and other jet drone systems.
