Iridium Communications (Nasdaq: IRDM) and Amazon Web Services have officially launched a satellite-enabled cloud computing service for connected device users worldwide.
The CloudConnect offering combines Iridium's internet-of-things technology with AWS' cloud and IoT platforms to expand coverage to approximately 80 percent of areas where terrestrial connectivity is limited, Iridium said Tuesday.
Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium and a 2020 Wash100 awardee, said the service reflects the company's ability to help customers connect and manage assets anywhere with its Iridium satellite network.
CloudConnect is designed to support communication between satellite-enabled devices and AWS IoT services via the Short Burst Data platform. SBD works to facilitate short data message transmission between equipment and central host computers.
