TYSONS CORNER, VA, May 21, 2018 Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium Communications (Nasdaq: IRDM), has said public and private sector collaboration is critical in solving the current space debris problem that threatens U.S. economic and national security, ExecutiveBiz reported May 14.
Desch wrote in a USA Today opinion piece published May 14 that the Trump administration should ensure accountability among satellite operators and initiate programs related to future space activities, particularly in manufacturing satellites, amid startups’ development and launch of satellites at low cost, which he said makes the units potentially replaceable and vulnerable to failure.
We are facing the possibility of thousands and thousands of satellites designed to have a short lifespan, and a significant percentage of them become rocks in space, waiting to collide, thus creating more debris, Desch, a 2018 Wash100 awardee, added.
