IBM's Keith Salzman: US Should Focus Some Healthcare Funds to Social Services

TYSONS CORNER, VA, May 27, 2016 ” Keith Salzman, chief medical information officer for IBM‘s (NYSE: IBM) global business services, believes one-third of the U.S. government’s $3 trillion healthcare budget has been underutilized, Executive Gov reported Wednesday.

Salzman wrote in an IBM Center for the Business of Government blog entry posted Tuesday that the government should also put healthcare investments in social services in order to efficiently achieve the desired outcomes.

“[Healthcare] can affect about 10% of the beneficiary™s experience of health while other factors — socioeconomic status, environment, education, behavior (social determinants of health) — account for roughly 60%, ” he said.

“Taking the wasted investment that is misapplied to healthcare and repurposing it to well-managed social services programs, the impact on health could be significant without increasing the overall spend.”
