HII Gets $107M Advance Funding for Navy’s LHA 9 Amphibious Warship; Kari Wilkinson Quoted

A Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) division has received a potential three-year, $107 million contract modification to provide long lead-time materials and support advance procurement efforts for the U.S. Navy’s amphibious assault ship LHA 9.

The fourth modification to a previously awarded contract with HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division brings the total advance LHA 9 funding to approximately $457 million, HII said Monday.

Kari Wilkinson, president of HII Ingalls Shipbuilding, said the amphibious warship production line is a key component of the country’s defense industrial base and the funding will reinforce suppliers and help sustain jobs in support of LHA 9 development efforts.

The Department of Defense said Naval Sea Systems Command will obligate $80.4 million in shipbuilding and conversion funds for fiscal year 2021 at the time of award.

Work will occur in Mississippi, Michigan, New York, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia through April 2024.

In early 2020, Ingalls Shipbuilding delivered the second America-class amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) to the Navy. Construction work on Bougainville (LHA 8) is now under way.
