General Dynamics Lands $2.3B Navy Submarine Contract

General Dynamics Electric Boat has received a $2.28 billion contract modification from the U.S. Navy for advance procurement and early construction efforts for Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.

What Are the Details of the General Dynamics Contract Modification?

The Department of Defense said Monday the cost-only modification, awarded Nov. 12 to the General Dynamics subsidiary, will support work on SSBN 828 through 832 hulls. The contract follows Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement provisions governing obligations ahead of fiscal year 2026 funding availability.

Seventy percent of the work will be performed in Groton, Connecticut, with the remainder in Newport News, Virginia, and Quonset Point, Rhode Island. The Navy anticipates the project will be completed by December 2031.

Naval Sea Systems Command plans to allocate $2.23 billion from the fiscal 2026 National Sea-Based Deterrence Fund and $54.2 million in fiscal 2026 other procurement funds once available. Both funding lines will remain active beyond the current fiscal year.

What Contracts Has General Dynamics Electric Boat Secured for Columbia-Class Submarines?

The latest modification builds on the $5.13 billion award from December 2022 for the procurement of long lead-time materials for five Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines. The initial $5.07 billion contract, awarded in September 2017, covers integrated product and process development design completion, component and technology development, missile tube and reactor compartment prototyping, and U.K. Strategic Weapon Support System kit production.
