The General Dynamics business unit said Monday the work falls under its $6.75 billion multi-ship contract awarded in 2024, covering the delivery of eight oilers, spanning T-AO 214 through T-AO 221.
“The T-AO program holds significant importance to the men and women of NASSCO and is one we take great pride in – it’s the longest running Navy production series in NASSCO history,” said Dave Carver, president of General Dynamics NASSCO. “The timely funding for these two ships will act to stabilize the workforce by sustaining an important backlog and prevent future layoffs.”
What Are the Previous Contracts Under the Navy-NASSCO Partnership?
NASSCO holds contracts to build 17 of the Navy’s planned 20-ship program of record and has delivered four so far. The partnership began in 2016 when the Navy selected the company to design and construct the first six John Lewis-class oilers. The contract was expanded in 2022 to include three additional ships, T-AO 211 through 213.
What Are John Lewis-Class Oilers?
The John Lewis-class ships are 742-foot vessels designed to refuel Navy ships while operating at sea. Each ship can carry up to 162,000 barrels of fuel, transport dry cargo and support aviation operations. They have a full load displacement of 49,850 tons and can reach speeds of up to 20 knots.
