Phebe Novakovic, chairman and CEO of General Dynamics, said in a statement published Wednesday Steel brings experience in finance and government service to the board.
He currently serves as a partner with Perella Weinberg Partners, a global provider of advisory services on several areas including government matters, merger and acquisition, private capital and financial structuring.
Steel was also CEO and president of Wachovia Corp. where he led its merger with Wells Fargo and Co.
His career also includes serving for almost three decades at Goldman Sachs, taking on different roles such as the investment firm's vice chairman, global equities division head and management committee member.
At the government, he led an effort to modernize the Treasury Department's regulatory structure and reactivated the President’s Working Group, an organization originally made to address 2008's global economic crisis.
The finance expert also served as deputy mayor for economic development at New York City, where he helped former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg create jobs and develop the city's economy.
