The First Responder Network Authority has called on industry to propose ideas on how to deploy a public safety broadband network nationwide in a move to update the country’s communications infrastructure.
FirstNet released a request for proposals for a modernized first responder and public safety communications system after the agency held dialogues with industry, the organization said Wednesday.
“We have developed this RFP in an open forum to create a ‘first of its kind’ public-private partnership for the network, ” said FirstNet CEO Mike Poth.
The FirstNet program is set to award up to $6.5 billion for contracts under the program, which will run for up to 25 years, Nextgov reported Wednesday.
FirstNet consulted with the federal, state, territory and tribal governments and the Public Safety Advisory Committee to develop the program.
Submissions for the project will close on April 29, 2016, and review of the proposals is set to end in the fourth quarter of 2016.
