Dan Coats
Director of National Intelligence and a 2019 Wash100 winner Dan Coats will leave his post on Aug. 15, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.
Coats, who assumed the role in March 2017, recently named Shelby Pierson, a more than 20-year intelligence community veteran, to the newly created role of IC election threats executive.
Election security is an enduring challenge and a top priority for the IC, Coats said in relation to Piersons appointment.
President Donald Trump thanked Coats, a former senator from Indiana, for his service to the country and announced in a tweet his plans to nominate Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) to serve as the next DNI.
Ratcliffe serves on the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees. He previously served as U.S. attorney of the eastern district of Texas and as a partner at the law firm of John Ashcroft, former attorney general.
