David Van Wie
David Van Wie, formerly mission area executive for precision strike mission at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, has been named head of the nonprofit research organization’s air and missile defense sector.
He will lead the segment that aims to increase the country’s ability to defend against missile and aircraft threats, APL said Tuesday.
The 35-year APL veteran supported the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, Defense Science Board and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in various studies.
Van Wie has conducted research on topics such as missile defense, unconstrained warfare, conventional prompt global strike and hypersonics. He also authored more than 140 articles about hypersonic air breathing propulsion, plasma aerodynamics and high-temperature fluid dynamics.
He also serves as a faculty member at Johns Hopkins University’s G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering and is a recipient of the Air Force Award for Meritorious Civilian Service.
