Henry Chao, a more than two-decade veteran of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, has been appointed chief technology officer at Columbia, Md.-based health information technology contractor FEI Systems.
FEI said Tuesday Chao will oversee the development of service offerings for CMS and state Medicaid programs and coordinate product alignment efforts for the company’s state and commercial health care business.
He previously held the roles of deputy director, deputy chief information officer and CTO at CMS’ information services office, as well as served as CIO at the Department of Health and Human Services‘ consumer information and insurance oversight office.
During his federal career, he helped plan and implement legislative measures that aimed to transform the U.S. health care system.
Chao developed reference architectures and technical standards for various CMS programs that include the Insurance Marketplace and authored a book about the launch of HealthCare.gov.
