The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has named IT executive Patrick Newbold as chief information officer, effective Nov. 4, Federal News Network reported Friday.
Newbold will join CMS from NASA, where he serves as deputy CIO.
The CIO position at CMS has been open since November when Rajiv Uppal stepped down to serve in the similar post at the Internal Revenue Service.
The executive move comes as the Department of Health and Human Services continues its reorganization effort aimed at streamlining technology, data, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity strategy and policy functions.
The restructuring announced in July includes renaming the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology as the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, or ASTP/ONC.
Incoming CIO’s Federal Career
Since January, Newbold has been serving as deputy CIO for strategy at NASA.
Prior to this role, he was acting CIO for the Social Security Administration, where he led the agency’s IT modernization program.
Before SSA, he served as deputy CIO and director of enterprise IT at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The former Army Congressional Fellow served as a senior staffer and policy adviser to a congressional member on national security, veterans affairs, small business and military construction matters, among others.
