Anduril Industries has purchased Copious Imaging for an undisclosed sum to further expand its family of counter-unmanned aircraft systems and force protection platforms with the addition of the latter’s passive sensing technology.
Copious Imaging is a Lexington, Massachusetts-based technology company that spun off from MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory in 2017 and is the developer of the Wide-Area Infrared Sensing with Persistence technology, Anduril said Tuesday.
WISP is a long-wave infrared motion imaging platform that can detect, classify and track aerial and ground objects of interest. It is also a passive sensor that can evade detection and can be incorporated into radar-based platforms.
“Copious Imaging has built the most sophisticated passive sensors on the market. Integrating the WISP technology into Anduril’s family of systems will provide a powerful capability for our customers,” said Brian Schimpf, co-founder and CEO of defense tech company Anduril.
Copious Imaging CEO Bill Ross said the combination will enable the companies to engineer and deliver an AI-enabled sensing system to the Department of Defense.
Gesmer Updegrove and Needham & Co. served as legal counsel and financial adviser, respectively, to Copious Imaging. Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati acted as Anduril’s legal counsel in the transaction.
