The State Department has approved Japan’s request to procure up to five Northrop Grumman-made (NYSE: NOC) E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning and control aircraft, related equipment and services from the U.S. government under a foreign military sales agreement worth approximately $1.4 billion.
Northrop will serve as the prime contractor in the FMS deal, which will enable Japan to improve its capability to support homeland defense and provide situational awareness of naval and aerial activity in the Pacific region, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
The transaction also includes T56-A-427A engines, multifunction information distribution system joint tactical radio system terminals, APY-9 radars, AN/AYK-27 integrated navigation control and display systems and ALQ-217 electronic support measures systems.
The East Asian country also requested aircraft ancillary equipment, spare and repair parts, software, publications and technical documentation, ferry services, personal protective equipment, personnel training and training equipment, logistics, engineering, program and technical support services.
The proposed sale will require temporary in-country visits of U.S. government and contracting staff to Japan to help meet management oversight and program technical requirements.
