- Nuclear Fuel Services will perform the manufacturing work
- Fuel supports five submarine classes and two aircraft carrier classes
- Work under the award is scheduled to be finished in August 2027
BWX Technologies has received a contract valued at approximately $189 million to produce fuel for U.S. Navy nuclear reactors.
In a LinkedIn post Thursday, BWXT said its subsidiary Nuclear Fuel Services will fabricate and deliver the fuel under the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
Which Navy Vessels Use BWXT Reactor Fuel?
Reactors and fuel from BWXT drive the Navy’s Columbia-, Ohio-, Virginia-, Seawolf- and Los Angeles-class submarines, as well as the Ford- and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. The company expects to finish work under the new award in August 2027.
The contract follows a $174 million Navy award BWXT disclosed in October 2025 to supply reactor fuel through summer 2026.
The Navy program has also drawn a recent investment. In September 2025, Naval Sea Systems Command awarded Fluor Marine Propulsion a $2 billion contract modification to continue providing services for the Naval Nuclear Propulsion program at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory.
What Does the BWXT Nuclear Fuel Services Facility Do?
BWXT’s plant in Erwin, Tennessee, converts highly enriched uranium into fuel for every reactor in the U.S. naval fleet and has supported Navy fuel production for over six decades. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses the site as a high-security, Category 1 nuclear facility.
What Did BWXT Say About the Navy Award?
Howard Markle, president of BWXT’s nuclear operations group, said the award “underscores the Navy’s confidence” in the company’s performance record and its role in fueling the fleet. He called the work an “essential national security mission.”
BWXT, a Fortune 1000 company with over 11,000 employees, operates 19 manufacturing facilities worldwide. Through 14 strategic partnerships, it supports Canadian and U.S. government programs at more than two dozen other sites.
