Amazon has entered a definitive agreement to acquire Globalstar to expand its Amazon Leo satellite connectivity services.
Amazon said Thursday that the acquisition will enable the company to add direct-to-device services, offering voice, text and data services in areas with limited terrestrial cellular coverage.
Additionally, the Seattle, Washington-headquartered technology provider signed a deal with Apple to deliver satellite services to iPhones and Apple Watches.

Satellite connectivity is becoming a critical service not just for the commercial sector, but also for government and military missions. At the Potomac Officers Club’s 2026 Air and Space Summit, scheduled for July 30, leaders from the Department of War, Space Force and Air Force will convene to identify the capabilities services need from industry to support defense objectives and discuss new opportunities for public-private partnerships. How Will Amazon Integrate Globalstar Into Its LEO Services?
Under the agreement, Amazon will acquire Globalstar’s existing satellite operations, infrastructure and assets, including its mobile satellite services, or MSS, and spectrum licenses from around the world.
The addition of Globalstar’s spectrum and MSS capabilities is expected to ensure continuous connectivity for Amazon Leo’s commercial and government customers.
“There are billions of customers out there living, traveling, and operating in places beyond the reach of existing networks, and we started Amazon Leo to help bridge that divide,” Panos Panay, senior vice president of devices and services at Amazon, stated. “By combining Globalstar’s proven expertise and strong foundation with Amazon’s customer-obsession and innovation, customers can expect faster, more reliable service in more places—keeping them connected to the people and things that matter most.”
Globalstar CEO Paul Jacobs added that low Earth orbit satellites “offer the most effective path” to connect users everywhere, and Amazon’s acquisition of his company marks a step toward global connectivity.
“The combination with Amazon Leo will advance innovations in digital connectivity that will benefit our customers and advance us toward a more intelligent, continuously connected world,” Jacobs commented.
Amazon plans to launch its own D2D satellite system in 2028.
What Will the Amazon-Apple Partnership Offer to Consumers?
Amazon’s partnership with Apple is expected to power current and future iPhone and Apple Watch models with satellite connectivity, allowing users to send messages to friends and family or request emergency or roadside assistance when needed.
Globalstar currently provides satellite services on iPhone 14 and later models and Apple Watch Ultra 3. Following the acquisition, Amazon will continue to support iPhone and Apple Watch models that utilize Globalstar services.
