TYSONS CORNER, VA, April 12, 2021 — A solar electric propulsion system manufactured by Maxar Technologies (NYSE: MAXR) for NASA’s Psyche asteroid exploration mission arrived at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California in late March, ExecutiveBiz reported March 30.
JPL said March 29 efforts are underway to assemble the spacecraft the agency will launch in August 2022 to explore a metal-rich asteroid that can be found in space between Mars and Jupiter.
Robert Curbeam, senior vice president of space capture at Maxar, said the company originally developed the propulsion hardware to support commercial communications satellites.
“We are excited to leverage this technology for a NASA deep space exploration mission and see great promise for adapting it to support a range of critical government space missions in the future,” Curbeam added.
