Expanse's Matt Kraning: Asset Inventory Could Help Agencies Understand Entire Attack Surface

Matt Kraning, chief technology officer and co-founder of Expanse, said the rapid increase in the use of cloud-based platforms and other information technology tools to support telework during the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the need for government agencies to implement asset management.

Kraning wrote that agencies looking to address and avoid security gaps “must have a simple, comprehensive process for gaining insight into technologies as they’re added to the network.”

He said IT teams at agencies should be able to see and track new platforms and know what they need to defend in order to ensure the security of their IT systems, tools and users.

“A complete asset inventory helps agencies understand the entirety of their attack surface so they can protect it. Those insights are also essential for efficient budgeting and planning,” he said.

Kraning also cited the need for agencies to adopt zero trust architectures “that assume a well-defined perimeter no longer exists.”
