FLIR Systems (Nasdaq: FLIR) has purchased the intellectual property and tethered drone assets of Aria Insights for an undisclosed sum.
FLIR said Wednesday it will integrate the acquired assets from the now defunct company into its unmanned systems and integrated solutions division.
Aria Insights, formerly known as CyPhy Works, was established in 2008 with a focus on building tethered small unmanned aircraft systems, including the Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications tethered drone. Aria stopped operations in March.
Tethered UAS systems are becoming an increasingly valuable tool for force protection, border security, and critical infrastructure protection, said David Ray, president of FLIRs government and defense business.
Ray added Arias IP assets and tech platforms will further build up FLIRs current capabilities and help the latter develop a range of platforms for customers in the tethered UAS market segment.
Tethered drones are linked to a vehicle or base station through a microfilament wire and work to provide users with persistent situational awareness.
