President Donald Trump is expected this week to order the creation of a new combatant command that would focus on space, CNN reported Monday.
Vice President Mike Pence is set to visit Tuesday the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and the Pentagon this week to talk about the administrations plan for a new space force.
Trump is expected to declare as early as Tuesday the launch of a new space command and ask Defense Secretary James Mattis to nominate candidates for the new organizations commander and deputy chief roles, according to a defense official with knowledge of the matter.
The official added that the White House would announce that the new command will mark the first step in the establishment of a separate space force, “consolidate space operations under a single authority and streamline command and control of time-sensitive operations.
Mattis is expected to submit a letter to the Senate and House Armed Services Committees to revoke a provision in the fiscal 2018 National Defense Authorization Act, which forms space command as part of Strategic Command, two officials told the publication.
