Military Working Dogs are a vital part of today’s fighting force. With built-in radar, they are able to smell out trouble that no human or man-made device can. K-9 teams in the Army provide a variety of support, from patrol work around base to searches during health-and-welfare inspections and sweeps for explosives. In Iraq and Afghanistan, K9 teams assist in numerous missions including detecting threats like improvised explosive devices. U.S. Army Video by Pfc. Geordan J. Tyquiengco, 8th TSC Public Affairs. Soldiers from the 520th Military Working Dog Detachment, 728th Military Police Battalion, 8th Military Police Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command and the Honolulu Police Department K-9 Unit conducted joint training at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The training emphasized best practices when using a MWD within a stack formation while entering and clearing a building. The K-9™s and their handlers were also tested on their abilities to find explosives and drug paraphernalia.
