TYSONS CORNER, VA, Sept. 12, 2017 Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) has unveiled its findings on the recent activities of a cyber espionage group called “Dragonfly” that has targeted the energy sector in Europe and North America, ExecutiveBiz reported Monday.
The company said Wednesday Dragonfly appears to have re-emerged in late 2015 and launched cyber attacks against energy systems in Switzerland, Turkey and the U.S. in which the group used spear phishing emails, Trojanized software and “watering hole” websites to access and monitor operational systems.
“What it plans to do with all this intelligence has yet to become clear, but its capabilities do extend to materially disrupting targeted organizations should it choose to do so,” Symantec concluded.
