TYSONS CORNER, VA, June 28, 2017 Space Systems Loral has teamed with NanoRacks and United Launch Alliance to work with NASA in efforts to determine the feasibility of converting rocket upper stages into commercial space habitats, ExecutiveBiz reported Friday.
SSL said June 21 the Ixion Initiative Team will explore the potential for its robotic systems and solar electric propulsion capability to perform the task as well as the possibility of using commercial habitats to support orbital satellite assembly and manufacturing.
“Now that we are under contract, we can begin exploring the benefits of reusability and how our robotics and propulsion systems can contribute to next-generation space habitats,” said Richard White, president of SSLs government systems business.
