IBM Closes HashiCorp Acquisition

IBM has finalized its acquisition of HashiCorp to broaden its capabilities designed to help organizations automate hybrid-cloud environments to drive innovation and strengthen security amid the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence tools.

“Organizations globally are looking to deploy modern, hybrid cloud-ready apps, which require automated cloud infrastructure at significant scale,” Rob Thomas, senior vice president, software and chief commercial officer at IBM, said in a statement published Thursday.

“With this acquisition, IBM is committed to continuing to invest in and grow the HashiCorp capabilities, and together, with HashiCorp’s leading technology and extensive developer community, IBM’s global reach and R&D resources, our aim is to infuse HashiCorp technology in every data center,” Thomas added.

In April 2024, IBM struck a $6.4 billion deal to buy San Francisco-based HashiCorp. HashiCorp’s infrastructure lifecycle management and security lifecycle management offerings help organizations automate hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Driving Synergies Across Strategic Growth Areas

Through the acquisition, IBM expects HashiCorp’s capabilities to drive key synergies across strategic growth areas, including watsonx, data security, Red Hat and IT automation and consulting.

The New York-based technology company said HashiCorp’s Terraform and Vault offerings are now part of its automation software portfolio.

According to IBM, HashiCorp Vault could offer management and security capabilities across hybrid cloud platforms when combined with Red Hat OpenShift. Meanwhile, Terraform could help automate infrastructure creation across multiple cloud providers when combined with the Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform.

The transaction marks IBM’s continuous investments in automation software, including AI-backed software for application management insights to help identify, predict and recommend solutions to problems, software for IT stack observability and financial management tools.
