Battelle Wins $3.8B DOE Contract to Manage Savannah River National Lab; Lou Von Thaer Quoted

A Battelle-led team that includes five universities and two small businesses will help the Department of Energy run the Savannah River National Laboratory under a potential 10-year, $3.8 billion contract.

The nonprofit company said Tuesday the Battelle Savannah River Alliance members are Clemson University, South Carolina State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Georgia, University of South Carolina, TechSource and Longenecker & Associates.

“We are honored by DOE’s decision to award the Savannah River National Laboratory management and operations contract to our team,” said Lou Von Thaer, president and CEO of Battelle and 2020 Wash100 Award recipient.

“We have the lab management experience to make a difference and we’re committed to ensuring the success of this important national resource.”

South Carolina-based conducts research and development projects to help the federal government address the country’s energy, nuclear security, manufacturing and environmental challenges.

Battelle also provides management support to seven other DOE-funded national laboratories.
