Former NRO Chief Betty Sapp Elected to Ball Board

Betty Sapp, former director of the National Reconnaissance Office, has joined Ball (NYSE: BLL) as a member of the board of directors.

John Hayes, chairman, president and CEO of Ball, said in a statement published Tuesday Sapp will complement Ball’s leadership team and board as the company continues efforts to meet its Drive for 10 vision and works to leverage opportunities within its packaging and aerospace businesses.

Sapp, a 2019 Wash100 winner, joined the NRO in 1997 and was appointed director of the agency in 2012.

She served as deputy undersecretary for intelligence at DoD and worked for 17 years at the U.S. Air Force, where she held financial management and acquisition roles with oversight of space and satellite initiatives.

Firefly Aerospace has been qualified to compete for task orders under a potential 10-year, $700 million contract to provide its Alpha rocket to launch small satellites for the National Reconnaissance Office. The company will serve as a launch service provider under the Streamlined Launch Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity Contract to deploy NRO satellites to low Earth orbit from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California and the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Firefly Aerospace closed the third tranche of its Series C Funding round, bumping the valuation of the end-to-end space transportation company to $1.5 billion. It has raised around $300 million since February this year. During the round, Mitsui & Co. and other new investors joined existing investors led by AE Industrial Partners, Firefly Aerospace said Friday.
