Mark Esper: DoD to Open Testing Labs, Readies Hospital Ships in Response to Coronavirus

Defense Secretary and 2020 Wash100 awardee Mark Esper said the Department of Defense would open up to 16 laboratories to test civilians for the new coronavirus and offer up to 5M respirator masks and 2K specialized ventilators, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. The U.S. military is also preparing its hospital ships, USNS Comfort and USNS Mercy, for possible deployment to U.S. locations facing increasing number of COVID-19 cases, particularly in Washington state and New York.

Pentagon Chief Mark Esper Launches US Space Command

Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Thursday officially unveiled U.S. Space Command as the 11th unified combatant command led by Air Force Gen. John Raymond. “Gen. Raymond is acutely aware of the vital role that space plays in U.S. national security and our way of life and is an ideal choice to lead this new command,” Esper, a 2019 Wash100 winner, said in a statement published Thursday.
