HII’s Shipbuilding Unit Books $1.3B Contract Modification to Build Navy’s 3rd Flight II LPD Ship

An HII (NYSE: HII) shipbuilding division will design and construct a third Flight II amphibious ship for the U.S. Navy under a $1.3 billion contract modification.

The award comes nine months after Ingalls Shipbuilding secured $240 million in advance funds to obtain long-lead-time items and equipment needed to build LPD 32, the company said Friday.

LPD 32, the 16th vessel in the Navy’s San Antonio class, will have the configuration designed to replace Whidbey Island and Harpers Ferry dock landing ship platforms.

“This program is strong and has enabled the Department of Navy and Ingalls to establish a formidable capability based on a mature design, an ever-increasingly efficient production line, and a team of shipbuilders that keep the Navy’s critical industrial base network across the country strong,” Ingalls Shipbuilding President Kari Wilkinson said.

Construction is underway on the first two Flight II vessels, Harrisburg (LPD 30) and Pittsburgh (LPD 31).
