“Those with a historical GovCon perspective will recognize that the crown jewel of URS’s acquisition of AECOM was the strength of the management team. Specifically, John Vollmer, originally of URS, has executed with his team a highly profitable and strategic acquisition strategy including as a major vector DynCorp, PAE and Apptis, woven together as a synergistic technology augmentation,” said Jim Garrettson, CEO of Executive Mosaic and founder of the Wash100 Award.

“John drove the company’s rebranding to Amentum and morphed with authority into sophisticated technology solutions markets while maintaining a commanding presence in engineering, consulting, cyber and technology solutions.”

Garrettson continued, “John is a maestro; he has the intellectual scope to see the mosaic before it appears obvious to the market. Fitting together the many tiles of the mosaic has included the successful global orchestration of many widely dispersed teams while keeping a full spectrum of customer contracts fulfilled as his executive team blended crushing amounts of administrative, records and legal requirements.”

Amentum announced in February 2022 that Vollmer will transition from his role as CEO to chairman of the company’s board of directors, effective March 28. John Heller, former CEO and president of PAE and a six-time Wash100 awardee, will become the next chief executive.

The reorganization comes one month after Vollmer led Amentum through its $1.9 billion all-cash purchase of PAE. He said the acquisition will deepen Amentum’s existing customer relationships with federal agencies such the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of State and NASA, while expanding the company’s intelligence and technology portfolios.

“The acquisition of PAE has made Amentum the second largest provider of services to the government, with more than 50,000 people and a total combined revenue of more than $9 billion in 2021,” Vollmer told ExecutiveBiz in an Executive Spotlight interview.

Vollmer took the helm of Germantown, Maryland-based technical and engineering services company, Amentum – which rebranded from AECOM’s management services business – upon its launch on Feb. 1, 2020. Since its inception, Vollmer has spearheaded a growth strategy that has more than doubled its revenue.

At the beginning of 2021, Amentum initiated its incorporation of DynCorp, following its purchase of the military contractor at the end of 2020.

“We started off the year having just completed our first transformational acquisition, which took us from a $4 billion company to a $6 billion-plus company before our first birthday,” Vollmer commented on the company’s early success.

The company’s increasing roster of large contract wins has also been a main contributor to its growth over the past year. In September, Amentum won spots on nine pools of the General Services Administration’s multibillion-dollar ASTRO contract vehicle.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, Amentum won several billion-dollar awards for environmental cleanup services. Amentum’s joint venture with Honeywell and Jacobs clinched an $8.3 billion Oak Ridge Reservation Cleanup contract and another Amentum-led team secured a $21 billion contract for cleanup of the Savannah River Site within the same month.

Amentum was also tapped in Q4 of 2021 to manage two National Nuclear Security Administration sites with Fluor under a $28 billion contract.

Vollmer said these contracts, “totaling $57 billion in total contract value, enable Amentum to maintain our leadership position in the DOE Environmental Management market and positions us to expand our role in maintaining a strategic deterrent in support of our national security.”

Additionally, near the close of 2021, Amentum was tapped to provide aviation services to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations division through a $1.3 billion contract.

The company has continued to secure notable awards into 2022 with January wins including a $462 U.S. Navy contract for range operations and maintenance support on the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center, as well as a $301 million task order from the U.S. Air Force for maintenance and flight routine aid.

Reflecting upon his time as head of Amentum, Vollmer said, ”I am incredibly proud to have led Amentum during its first two critical years, and it has been a privilege to lead such a talented and dedicated workforce who care deeply about our customers and their success.”

Executive Mosaic congratulates John Vollmer and the Amentum team on their selection to the 2022 Wash100 Award. Vollmer is recognized both for his impact to date as leader of Amentum and for his anticipated influence in his new role as chairman.
