Dell Technologies’ Al Ford, Brian Carnell: Federated Learning Could Help Agencies Realize AI’s Full Potential

Al Ford and Brian Carnell of Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL) said government agencies looking to adopt and rapidly field artificial intelligence tools to support missions and operations should shift from creating data lakes to using the federated learning approach.

“Federated learning allows agencies to set up containers with AI algorithms at the edge so they can train machine learning models and analyze data right where it is generated,” Ford and Carnell wrote.

“That approach reduces bandwidth requirements and helps agencies achieve what AI promises, which is faster and more accurate decisions,” they added.

With federated learning, Ford and Carnell noted that agencies can use historically valuable data in training models and move the algorithm to the edge for faster data processing while allowing them “to leapfrog the technical debt and network latency that are associated with moving data.”

They also called on agencies to deploy scalable and flexible computing architectures with built-in security capabilities to speed up data processing and field AI algorithms that can support their missions and other requirements.

Ford is AI alliances manager and Carnell is chief AI architect at Dell Technologies.
