Boom Secures Additional $60M Air Force Funds for Supersonic Airliner R&D

Boom has received a $60 million Strategic Funding Increase contract from the U.S. Air Force to continue research and development of a supersonic aircraft platform.

The additional funds will support work on the Overture airliner envisioned to carry 65 to 88 passengers, travel at twice the speed of current commercial planes and use sustainable aviation fuel, Boom said Tuesday.

The company seeks to advance its proposed technology into the manufacturing phase sometime in 2023 and intends for the vehicle to commence flight operations by the end of the decade.

“With STRATFI, we’re able to collaborate with the Air Force on the unique requirements and needs for global military missions,” said Blake Scholl, founder and CEO of Boom.

The award, which was made through AFWERX and AFVentures, follows the company’s Small Business Innovation Research Phase 2 contract with the service in September 2020.
