Iridium Unveils Availability of Certus Broadband Service for Terrestrial, Maritime Ops; Matt Desch Quoted

TYSONS CORNER, VA, January 25, 2018 — Iridium Communications (Nasdaq: IRDM) has officially launched the Iridium Certus broadband service that will work to deliver voice and internet connectivity at 352 kilobits per second for terrestrial and maritime applications, ExecutiveBiz reported Jan. 17.

The company said Jan. 16 the L-band service, which is powered by the Iridium NEXT satellite network, has completed global testing activities prior to this commercial launch and will next be available to support aviation operations later this year.

“[Iridium Certus] will enable us to provide broadband connections to teams, vehicles and the important IoT ‘things’ that are in the 80-plus percent of the world that lacks cellular coverage,” said Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium and a 2019 Wash100 awardee.
