PHILIPPINE SEA (March 24, 2018) Marines assigned to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 121 mount 1,000-pound guided bomb units (GBU) onto an F-35B Lightning II aircraft on the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) while underway in the Philippine Sea, March 24, 2018. This event marked the first time an F-35 Lightning II has been loaded with live ordnance at sea during an operational deployment. GBU-32s are GPS guided joint direct attack munitions that attach to VMFA 121’s F-35Bs. As the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed Marine Expeditionary Unit, the 31st MEU provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide range of military operations.
