Johns Hopkins APL Tests Free-Space Optical Comms System in Maritime Environment

TYSONS CORNER, VA, Aug. 28, 2017 — Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory has conducted a demonstration during the U.S. Navy‘s 2017 Trident Warrior Exercise to check the performance of a free-space optical communications system to connect ships at sea, ExecutiveBiz reported Friday.

The lab said Thursday a team of engineers tested the operational utility of the FSO communications platform compared to current radio-frequency systems in the maritime domain and verified the former’s support for up to 10 gigabits per second to link two moving ships.
