William Thomas, chairman of the Americas region at KPMG and a 28-year company veteran, has been named chairman of KPMG International in a move that takes effect Oct. 1.

He will succeed the retiring John Veihmeyer and oversee the company’s network of professional services firms for four years, KPMG said Thursday.

Veihmeyer has four decades of professional services industry experience and held senior leadership positions at KPMG that include U.S. deputy chairman and chairman and CEO.

He is a member of the board of trustees of the Financial Accounting Foundation and the U.S. Council for International Business and sits on the board of the U.S.-India Business Council.

Thomas spent seven years as CEO and senior partner of KPGM’s Canadian arm and has been a member of KPMG International’s global board since 2009.

He was recognized as a Catalyst Canada Honours Champion in 2015 and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
