Iridium, SpaceX Close Deal on NEXT, NASA-GFZ Satellite Rideshare; Matt Desch Comments

TYSONS CORNER, VA, Feb. 1, 2017 — Iridium Communications (Nasdaq: IRDM) has closed a deal with SpaceX for the simultaneous launch of the former’s NEXT communications satellites and the NASA-GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences mission’s twin satellites, ExecutiveBiz reported Tuesday.

Five Iridium NEXT satellites will be deployed with the NASA/GFZ Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On payload aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket in early 2018 as part of the rideshare agreement, Iridium said Tuesday.

Matt Desch, Iridium CEO, said the launch seeks to boost the resiliency of the Iridium NEXT global satellite network beyond the originally planned 72 on-orbit satellites.
