Executive Mosaic’s GovCon Index nudged a slight gain Thursday in a mostly positive session for the U.S. stock market at-large as investors listened to Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s congressional testimony.
GovCon Index decliners edged advancers and three of its 11 S&P 500 components closed green with Honeywell International (NYSE: HON) the best net gainer among co-listed stocks, while GCI-S&P stock Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) closed as the largest laggard for the Index overall.
Military shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) led all GCI advancers with a gain above $2.000 as CACI International (NYSE: CACI) and ICF (Nasdaq: ICFI) both added at least $1.00 each.
Raytheon and co-listed Boeing (NYSE: BA) both registered losses above the $1.00 mark.
Newport News, Virginia-based Huntington Ingalls has ended as a top five GCI net advancer in four of the last seven trading sessions and Thursday’s gain comes after credit rating agency Fitch Ratings said the U.S. Navy stands to benefit from defense spending increases under a Donald Trump presidency.
The S&P 500 came within four points of a new all-time record as investor speculation heightened over a December interest rate hike and possible stimulus under the next administration.
Futures markets priced in 96-percent odds on a December move after Yellen told lawmakers a rate increase is close and traders have started to bet on faster pace of hikes under a Trump presidency, Bloomberg reported.
Consumer stocks were the top gainers out of four S&P sectors with financial shares the largest decliner among the other seven.
