Alejandro Mayorkas, second-ranked official at theÂ Department of Homeland Security, Â will join Washington-based law firmÂ WilmerHale in November to supportÂ the deep civil and criminal litigation and internal investigations area.
WilmerHale said Wednesday Mayorkas will offer more than two decades ofÂ experience in public service and the private sector to help the firm work with clients.
Mayorkas has served as DHS’ deputy secretary sinceÂ December 2013 and helped lead a department with a $60 billion budget and 230, 000 employees in charge ofÂ government responsibilities such as responses to terrorist attacks, immigration laws and cybersecurity functions in support ofÂ public sectorÂ agencies andÂ businesses.
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh JohnsonÂ saidÂ WednesdayÂ DHS Management Undersecretary Russ Deyo will succeed Mayorkas on an acting basis from Oct. 29.
Prior to his role for DHS, Mayorkas ledÂ U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services between August 2009 and December 2013 and is a former U.S. attorney for California’s central district with responsibility over investigations and prosecutionsÂ ofÂ caseÂ matters such asÂ financial fraud, public corruption, cybercrime and international money laundering.
