Frank Culbertson: Orbital ATK Eyes Manned Cislunar Habitat by 2020


Orbital ATKTYSONS CORNER, VA, May 20, 2016 — Frank Culbertson, president of Orbital ATK‘s (NYSE: OA) space systems group, has indicated that the company seeks to use the Cygnus spacecraft as the model for a manned habitat in cislunar space, ExecutiveBiz reported Thursday.

The company said Wednesday Culbertson, who is also an inductee into Executive Mosaic‘s Wash100 for 2016, told a House panel that Cygnus can be utilized as a lunar-orbit outpost for NASA space crews by 2020.

“The experience gained in the cislunar proving ground will lead directly to longer mission durations in deep space and eventually enable a manned mission to Mars, ” Culbertson said in his testimony.

“[In] order to increase stay times in cislunar space and accommodate a range of technology demonstrations and scientific experiments, additional habitation space and consumables are necessary.”
