SPAWAR Vet Rod Smith Joins McKean Defense Group as CTO; Joseph Carlini Comments


Littoral-Combat-ShipRod Smith, a former deputy commander and executive director of the U.S. Navy‘s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, has joined McKean Defense Group LLC as chief technology officer.

He will report to CEO Joseph Carlini and be responsible for the company’s combat systems programs and growth strategy in the SPAWAR market, McKean Defense Group said Monday.

“As an employee-owned company, it is imperative that we continually invest in both our company and our strategic growth, ” said Carlini.

“Rod was a perfect candidate for this new role given his naval engineering duty officer background, his prior government service at the pinnacle of major U.S. Navy technology advancements, and his understanding of industry, ” Carlini added.

As SPAWAR deputy commander, Smith oversaw all SPAWAR operations and assisted in the program executive offices’ acquisition programs.

He also served as executive director of the San Diego-based Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific.
